Thank you for your interest in online microbiology at Mesa Community College. Hundreds of students have been successful in this course! I want to give you information so you can decide if the course is a good fit for you.
This is a fully online microbiology course. There will be no required in class meetings, exams, or labs.
To succeed in online courses you must be self motivated, organized, and focused. I will provide learning tools including PowerPoints, audio lectures, short video presentations, video guides for the experiments, study guides, etc. to help you learn the course content. You must use the course schedule and these tools to be successful in the course. When you come to campus all the lab materials are prepared for you. You will have to prepare the lab materials before you are able to do the experiments. In a standard 16 week semester a good rule of thumb is in addition to attending lab (3 hours per week) and lecture (2.5 hours per week) you need to studying for microbiology 1 hour per day. In the summer the course moves twice as fast since it is condensed into only 8 weeks.
To complete the course, you must purchase a custom microbiology lab kit from escience labs. For summer 2020 you must have the lab kit in your hands by the first day of class or May 26, 2020. For fall 2020 you must have the lab kit in your hands by September 10, 2020. It takes 7-10 days to process your order and up to 5 additional days for your kit to ship. The cost of the lab kit is $248. To purchase the lab kit, go to http://esciencelabs.com/ and click on Create Account. After you create your account, log in and click on Have a Code. The code for the kit is kit6007 (not just 6007 please type in kit6007).
We will only be using a microscope one time to look at seven slides you will prepare. You can use the microscopes in the biology study lab at Mesa Community College. You cannot go to other Maricopa Community Colleges or the Red Mountain Campus to use microscopes. The study lab hours are usually M-Th 9am-7pm and F 9am-3pm. If you live out of state I can provide you with a letter that may get you access to a microscope at a local community college. The other option is to purchase a microscope. This is the microscope you would need to purchase https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AM5XB5O It is under $100. This is the immersion oil you would need to purchase www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005XDCGMY it is under $10.
If campus is closed due to COVID-19 we will use a virtual microscope. Please email me before you purchase the microscope to check.
We will be using free online textbooks for this course. You do not need to purchase a lab manual, the lab kit you are purchasing comes with access to an online lab manual.
All testing will be done with a browser Lockdown and camera monitor so you will need a camera for your computer. MCCCD does not support chromebooks for lockdown and monitor as they cannot download the required software. An iPad can be used.
